Bootleggers Ball 3 (Alpha to Alliances Edition) – Organizer’s Report

Untap, Upkeep… Through the five years (!!) of Music City Old School’s existence, we’ve developed several traditions surrounding Our two major events. We have Bootleggers Ball in the early summer, and we have our Christmas event at the beginning of December. Bootleggers Ball is 93/94, Christmas is Alpha to Alliances. There’s a cookout or pre-event event somewhere the night before Bootleggers. The Christmas event features a charity raffle, for which Dustin Brossard graciously provides an...

Tournament Report: Middle School Meltdown (A Prelude to Bootleggers Ball 3)

Our big tournament weekends have so far involved some event on the Friday night before. In the past, it’s been house parties. This year, that wasn’t viable. But brother Finney organized a space at Bearded Iris Brewing north of downtown Nashville for the purposes of having a Middle School tournament. I put 18 names into the computer and we ran a 4 round event full of nostalgia for cards from 1995 to 2003.  Middle School...

The Gigaball – Deck Photos and Results

The Gigaball weekend saw the Nashville and Chattanooga crews of MCOS gather for a smorgasbord of Magic formats. On Friday, Middle School fired after we got settled in (and tapped the keg). Saturday morning began with breakfast and an Alpha to Alliances tourney. After lunch and a bit of rest, EC Old School 93/94 took us into the night. Twelve players participated in the events. These are the deck photos from each event. Check out...

The GigaBall

Music City Old School has grown. We’ve long been spread out across the Southeast, but now, about half of our regular members inhabit a sleepy little town in the hills of Tennessee called Chattanooga. Monthly get togethers at a taproom in Nashville were perfect for the hometown crowd, but sometimes proved too much for the Chatt folks to scrounge together the time to road trip 4 hours round trip. A few years ago, the Chatt...

Kumite IV – Organizer’s Report

Today we have a guest post from Dread Pirate Tim himself. He brings us the summary of the legendary Kumite IV… DISCLAIMER – The following tournament report was written prior to hearing about the positive tests for COVID-19 within the attendees of the Kumite event. In hindsight we should have done more, such as requiring masks while not eating/drinking and asking all in attendance to have their vaccinations so that we could better do our...

Alpha To Alliances: The Big Chill – Event Report

In early February a polar vortex descended on the Midwest, forcing the denizens to seek shelter indoors once again. Frigid temps (and not to mention the ever-present pandemic) once again ushered in a refrain we know now by heart: “wanna jam some games?” A2A: The Big Chill was organized (passive voice, for humility) to spread the gospel of the new Alpha to Alliances hotness a little farther. We’ve been playing and testing and brewing for...

Spectral Chaos in Spooky Season

The turn of the season from summer into fall has always been a time I looked forward to. But in this topsy-turvy 2020 with its interminably long and hot summer, I needed fall. But most of all, I needed Spooky Season. Halloween has long inaugurated fall. It’s generally the first full on COLD day of the year where we get to go outside and enjoy the crisp leaves and sharp air. But this year, everything...

MCOS Summer Slam – Organizer’s Report

August was a great time for Music City Old School. With the lack of any travel events in the US, we decided to hold an online tournament for a small number of participants. It didn’t replace Bootleggers or Players Ball or any of the other great meetups we all look forward to every year, but it gave everyone the opportunity to hang out, play Magic, and at least experience the 2020 version of whatever it...

Old School in the Time of Ice: Alpha through Alliances

Old School MTG has grown since its humble beginnings in the snowy Swedish fjords. Strip Mines proliferated and creatures dominated as Eternal Central loosened the restrictions of the Old Ways. The Atlantic Council instituted their land reforms and allowed for a more liberal adherence to the Laws of Time. Venerable Mages of Old in Sweden reached through time to Scry a potential future. The Paladins of the northern American plains decreed that more gentlemanly battles...

Announcing – Music City Old School SUMMER SLAM

Greeting, fellow Old Schoolers! This spring and summer has been been difficult to say the least what with the ‘rona going around and keeping us all inside. Due to public safety concerns, Bootleggers Ball 2020 was cancelled, along with the rest of everything. As other MTG events have moved online in a downsized fashion, we here in Music City thought we’d do the same. But it isn’t a BLB without being able to hang in...
